Phone Calls: How to Get a Real Person with a Shorter Wait Time

Thanks to Joyce Quam in North Carolina for this tip! She suggests adding this useful resource to add to our contact listings. Joyce says: I have used this over the past months for State Farm, Home Depot, Best Buy when the wait times were long or "I could not reach a person" and have found it very useful.

If you need to reach the best number (in most cases) with the shortest wait time, type this into the search field: Example: Best Buy: Type "Get a human Best Buy" and the link below will appear with a telephone number that works and in most cases with a short wait time.

Solutions to Problems

by Lois Breneman - Heart to Heart - 2013

Sunburn ~ Wet a clean washcloth with cold water, wring it out, and saturate the cloth with raw apple cider vinegar.  Lay the cloth on stinging sunburn for instant relief.  Allow the vinegar to soak into the skin before removing cloth.  Allow vinegar to dry on skin, and apply coconut oil to the sunburn.  It should be much better by the next day.

Mosquito Bites ~ My best new way to remove the furious itch of mosquito bites is to rub the inside of a banana peel on the bite.  It worked for me!  Lavender essential oil or tea tree oil also help to relieve the sting.  If that doesn't work for you, try applying apple cider vinegar, a slice of lemon, or a thick paste of baking soda and water to the bite.  Rubbing a bar of soap on the bite or running hot water on the area may help the itch as well. And then there's the remedy of putting a slice of onion on the bite, so take your pick, but I'd start with the banana peel.  That one worked best for me, along with lavender essential oil.  Here's a very interesting article about who mosquitoes prefer when it comes to their next meal.  Some factors that draw mosquitoes the most are people with blood type O, a full moon, and smelly feet!  Read it for yourself:  http://health.yahoo.net/experts/dayinhealth/why-are-some-people-mosquito-magnets

Sugar Cravings ~ Try this sugar buster!  Mix equal parts of coconut oil and a nut butter together, and add a small amount of raw honey (or stevia).  Eat a small amount when you crave sugar.  http://www.pvnutritionaltherapy.com/how-to-stop-sugar-cravings-with-the-sugar-buster/

Acne ~ Here's information about a cure without chemicals ~ http://empoweredsustenance.com/7-secrets-to-cure-acne-without-chemicals/

Silverfish Infestation ~ Get rid of silverfish naturally with lavender essential oil.  Dilute with water in a glass spray bottle.  Here's the link with more info: http://retromellie.hubpages.com/hub/How-to-get-rid-of-Silverfish-using-Lavender-Oil

Cobwebs and Spiders ~ To get rid of cobwebs and spiders, spray peppermint essential oil (diluted with water in a glass spray bottle) in the corners of every room as well as other places they seem to congregate.  You can also saturate cotton balls with peppermint oil and place them behind framed pictures and other places where they won't be noticed.

Never Enough Bathroom Towel Racks ~ When I was pregnant with our third child, I wondered where we could hang another towel in the bathroom.  We had two towel racks about five feet from the floor, next to each other, with a space of six inches between them.  After studying the situation one day, I came up with the solution of  installing another matching rack a foot below the two original racks, and centering it between them.  They overlapped just enough for a washcloth to be hung on the inside of the top two racks without interfering with the lower rack, where the third child's towels were to hang.  This  worked perfectly and looked nice - like it belonged.  Now that the three children are all married and trying to figure out where to hang all of their own towels, we still put all three racks to use with bath towels on the two upper racks and a hand towel on the lower one.  I also found a sweet metal decoration of birds with three more hooks for extra towels to use when family or friends visit.

If that's not enough space to hand towels, here's another way to extend space for hanging towels.  Install a spring-loaded shower curtain rod behind the existing shower curtain rod, and you've got more space for a few more.  They will be safe (dry) if using the tub for baths, but when showering the towels need to be slid away from the shower head.

Unsolicited Phone Calls ~ Add your phone number to the "Do Not Call" registry by calling 1-888-382-1222.  You must be calling from the phone number you want removed from the list.  It will take about 30 days before this takes effect.  Even if you were on the list earlier, but are once again getting lots of sales calls, it's time to call again.  This is not a permanent thing.  www.donotcall.gov

HOUSEHOLD TIPS
Fresh Smelling Moth Repellent ~ Make to use in your own home and also give as gifts.  If your grocery store doesn't have all these herbs, try your health food store.

1 cup cedar shavings (found in the pet department)

1/2 cup each of lavender blossoms, tansy blossoms, and minced lemon peel

1/4 cup each peppermint, pennyroyal, orris root and whole cloves

10 broken bay leaves as well as broken cinnamon and peppercorns

Stir well and add 5 drops cedar oil, 4 drops lavender oil and 3 drops lemon oil.

Cover tightly for two weeks, package in small wool or flannel bags, and tie with ribbon.

Unwrapping Bars of Soap ~ Linda Bahn in Pennsylvania reminded me of this tip worth mentioning again.  Unwrap bars of soap and store them in the linen closet in an open container or in your drawers for a fresh smell.  This dries out the bars of soap, makes them harder and the bars last longer.  A good way to stretch those dollars!

Securing Aluminum Foil and Plastic Wrap ~ Linda Crosby in Virginia shared how to do this.  On both ends of boxes of aluminum foil and plastic wrap, there are tabs to press in to keep the tube from falling to the floor when you pull on the roll.  It might say, "Press here to lock end." Great tip to know!

Quick Fix for Skin Irritations ~ I keep lavender essential oil handy in a kitchen cabinet in case skin discomfort or irritations.  Just one drop brings instant soothing.

Under-the-Bed Storage ~ Make use of the "free space"
under beds, by storing things in "Under-the Bed" storage containers.  If they won't quite fit under a bed, elevate the bed with four small blocks of wood, maybe 1 3/4 inches.  My husband custom made four blocks for me with a little hole drilled in the top of each block to fit the furniture glide (little round button) into the hole to keep the bed from moving off the blocks.  We might as well make use of that free space!

Keep a Record of Items Stored under the beds and elsewhere.  I simply drew a diagram with rectangles for each storage container and listed the items in each container.  Keep the diagrams in a specific location where you will remember!  It's helpful to have one copy kept near the storage items and another copy filed in an organizational notebook or file.

Sweet Smelling Sneakers ~ Wad up newspaper pages and stick them inside smelly tennis shoes and leave in overnight to absorb odors.  Teach your children to do this themselves.

Grill Cleaning ~ After using your grill, allow it to cool down a bit.  Wet newspapers thoroughly (a thickness of about 10 pages) and close the lid to the grill.  Leave newspapers inside overnight.  In the morning, the grill will be easy to wipe clean. ~ Ruth Ann Assaid in Virginia

Cloth Baby Carrier - The latest research says that parents should not let babies cry a lot.  Pick them up and cuddle them!  Through the years this advice has bounced back and forth, but consoling a crying baby is what I had always thought was best.  In fact, I used to rock my babies to sleep for naptimes and bedtimes as long as they would allow it.  When my babies were fussy, and I needed to do things around the house, I used a soft cloth baby carrier (no metal bars) to give security to my little ones and get housework done at the same time.  It was a lifesaver while trying to get dinner ready, often an hour when babies get fussy.  I've even heard that hour referred to as "arsenic hour," because of moms wanting to pull out their hair in all the frustration.  A baby carrier will help alleviate the stress.  The baby carrier I used was designed to carry a baby either in the front or the back.  It was also great for shopping, hiking or walking around the neighborhood, while at the same time giving the baby close contact with mother or daddy.  There are many brands of baby carriers available these days - a lot more than when my children were babies!  Do a search to find a good one or check out yard sales or consignment shops such as Once Upon A Child for a used baby carrier.  I saved ours for the grandchildren!

SMILES

One caller to our answering service gave me his name, number and message and then said, "You know my name. What's yours?"
"We're not allowed to give our names," I replied, "but my operator number is 4136."
Sounding disappointed, he said, "May I call you by your first digit, or would that be too personal?"   - Cited on www.ArcaMax.com

A little seven-year-old boy prayed one night before bed for God to give him a baby sister.
When he awakened the next morning, the youngster found that there was no baby. Undaunted, he prayed a second time for the same thing. Still no baby.
Some months later, the boy and his father made a trip to the local hospital. When the two of them arrived, they stepped into a room in the maternity section and found the boy's mother holding a precious baby sister in her right arm, and yet another baby sister in her left! The proud father looked down into the eyes of his son and said, "Now, aren't you glad you prayed?"
To which the little boy responded, "Yes, and aren't you glad I stopped when I did?"

A Card-Making Tip from Jackie Schlageter in New Mexico:
I get a freebee newsletter that always has loads of great free ideas in it.  One I got recently had the following link in it.  It is for Jan Bret cards and envelopes.  You can have the card generated with your own personal message, or like I did leave it plain and you can write what you want in it yourself.  There is one decorated envelope template and 8 really cute 4 fold cards there.  These can be made for that special child in your life or let the children make them and give them themselves.  Either way they will really enjoy them.  I hope that you and/or the children in your life enjoy these cards to make.    www.janbret.com/pdfcards/pdfcardgenerator_mitten.htm

A Prescription Tip - When our children are sick, the last thing we are thinking about is pinching pennies, but this is a tip that will really save you money.  My husband is a pharmacist and knows that generic and store-brand medications are regulated by the FDA just as name brands.  Store-brand over the counter medicines--like ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) must be just as effective as the name brand in order to be on the market.  So, always buy them because they work just as well.  The same is true for cough medicines, infant gas drops, vitamins, and even  prescription drugs.  Look right next to the name brand and chances are there will be a store-brand that can be as little as half the price! - Dollar Stretcher tip from Caroline in MN - http://www.stretcher.com/ - Used by permission.
