Scripture Rings

by Shannon Long ~ Used by permission
http://www.swtblessings.com/2011/04/scripture-rings.html

My sweet friend Susan asked me to make some scripture rings
for a retreat she and two other ladies are hosting this weekend.

 The retreat is a very special retreat-
only for those mothers who have lost children
 and I was honored to do something to help.

 Although a tad time consuming,
these are super easy to make and a great way to
share scriptures with someone.

Here's how to make them:

1. Print out the scriptures
 {see printables below or make your own using a business card template}
and cut them out.

2. Cut out scrapbook paper into rectangles a
 tiny bit larger than your scripture cards.
I used a different kind of paper for each verse.
{I used a paper cutter and it was much faster!}

3. Glue the scripture cards on top of the scrapbook rectangles.

4. Take the string off of the tags
{I used these tags}
and glue the scrapbook rectangle in the center of the tag.

5. Take a book ring and put thru the hole in a set of tags.

6. Grab a few pieces of ribbon and tie to the ring
and you are done.

These are awesome to put on your desk,
in your purse or to give as a gift!

Quote

Three good deterrents to sinning:

1. Make the goal of your life to please the Lord in everything and bring glory to Him!

2. Hate evil, knowing the devil wants to destroy you and those you love!

3. Don't give the devil an inch.  If you do, he will take a mile! - Lois

Teaching Principles During Family Time or Mealtime

by Lois Breneman ~ 2004 ~ Heart to Heart

The prayer list for praying for our children for 31 days is great, but the possibilities for this list don't stop with being a prayer guide for parents.  Not only is this list a good guide for parents to invest their time wisely by praying for their children every day, but young people who desire to glorify the Lord in their lives may want to pray these prayers for themselves and their friends as well.

This 31 day prayer list is also an excellent Bible study guide for parents and children together - a perfect tool for Family Nights.  Stories in the Bible can be chosen to reinforce each principle.   Many times a story is found within the scriptures given above.  Other life stories (maybe even your own) could be read or told as well to support these principles.  End with prayer for these principles to be lived out in the lives your children - and in the lives of their parents.

Another idea is to use one principle each day at mealtime - whichever meal works best for you.  Simply state the principle, read the verse and pray.  This will speak volumes to your children and they will remember it into adulthood, if you do it consistently.  During the meal you may want to discuss the principle further by having a Q & A session.

This is also a wonderful "Scripture Memorization" tool.  If you choose to use this plan each month, those 31 verses will be read twelve times each year, and those scriptures will be stored up in your children's hearts as long as the live.  I realize that life gets so busy sometimes that a good intention is dropped.  Well, just pick up and start again.  Be persistent.  The benefits are worth it!

A Fun Family Devotional Idea to Use with Children

by Lois Breneman, © 2006, Heart to Heart

Did you know the original Play-Doh just turned 50 years old and is still going strong?  Most of you moms probably grew up with Play-Doh yourselves and I hope you are still going strong, even at 50 years of age!  Here is a short version of a great homemade playdoh recipe, that I think lasts even longer than the store bought, as long as you wrap it well in plastic wrap when your children are finished playing.  Why not try it today?  Then talk together about how God is the Potter and we are the clay.

Homemade Playdoh
1 cup flour  - 1 cup water   - 1 Tbsp. oil  - 1/2 cup salt  - 2 tsp. cream of tartar  - food coloring

Blend in blender.  Cook about 5 minutes in a Teflon pan sprayed with Pam.  Let cool.  Wrap well in plastic wrap and it will last a long time.  If it dries a bit, just add a few drops of water and work into the dough.  Does not need refrigerated.

It is fun to make blue, yellow and pink.  Then mix colors to make orange, purple and green.  Coconut or peppermint flavorings may be added for fragrance.  Another method of adding color and fragrance would be to add Kool Aid. In fact, I think that's better than drinking it.

Family devotions do not have to be held in a living room or family room setting each time.  Deuteronomy 6:7 instructs parents to teach their children about the Lord diligently, as we go about our entire day - when we sit, when we walk, when we lie down and when we rise up.  That about covers all of life!

Children often seem to learn better in a more relaxed setting.  Why not sit around the table together as your children are molding playdoh to form snakes, balls and animals, and talk with them about clay in the Bible.  Explain how we should be willing to be molded and made into whatever God wants us to be, as in the song, "Have thine own way, Lord.  Have thine own way. Thou art the Potter.  I am the clay.  Mold me and make me after Thy will, while I am waiting, yielded and still."  You could sing that song together until it is written in their hearts.

Here are other scriptures to talk about as they play quietly and listen.  You may want to cover them all in several sessions:
Job 10:9 - Thou hast made me as the clay
Job 33:6  I am also formed out of clay
Psm. 40:2  Out of the miry clay
John 9:6  Jesus made clay and anointed a blind man with it.
Romans 9:21  Power over the clay
Additional scriptures: Isa. 29:16; 41:25; 45:9; 64:8; Jer. 18:4
