Our daughter, Joy, called us last Tuesday evening to say that our son-in-law, Wayne, had just sent us a package. She went on to explain, "When it comes, do not open it until you have us on the phone!" The package came by Federal Express -- overnight by 9:00 the next morning!
You can imagine how I shook and rattled that package off and on all day until we got them both on the phone that night, not to mention that smile on my face! I had a strong hunch, but didn't tell them what I suspected until after we had their news. Moms need to learn to "zip it" quite often, in case you don't already know!
So there John and I stood with the package on the desk and a hefty yellow box cutter in hand, while the four of us were on speaker phones! We could detect excitement in their voices, as they could in ours! Wayne said to open the card first! It said, "Grandparents' Starter Kit!" Inside it said, "Baby Due -- April 11, 2003!" Inside the package were all kinds of sweet-smelling baby supplies for us to use with our new grandbaby when the time comes -- a big pack of Johnson's baby supplies, bibs, burping cloth, pacifiers, baby's first keys, bottles, and a stuffed toy!
They had wanted to tell us this special news in person, but their plans had changed and now they weren't coming up in October as previously planned. They knew that by their next trip in November, the minute they walked in the door, we'd notice Joy's unmistakably "new appearance," and they didn't want to tell us that way. So Joy came up with this plan of a package with a Grandparents' Starter Kit!" We loved it!
Because Joy didn't get morning sickness, we had no idea she had been pregnant when we all spent a week's vacation together in July and even had them in our home two weekends since that! They wanted to get through the first trimester before telling us. At least we have less time to wait now! Joy heard the baby's heartbeat already at ten weeks and said she plans to record it this Friday for us to hear! If I sound a little bit excited, you are not a bit mistaken!
One of Joy's cousins, Julie (with her husband, Mike), is also due to have their first baby a few days before Joy and Wayne's baby is expected. A special touch, planned by the Lord, is that tucked right in between Julie and Joy's due dates, is their Grandma Walker's birthday! I wish I could see my mother's beaming smile looking down from her Heavenly Home right now, with my dad looking on, as they both think about their 10th and 11th great-grandchildren being formed by Almighty God in the wombs of their two dearly loved granddaughters!
